Link: To The Rescue!

Image
After a long few months of work, I finally completed my Link animation!  Link is casually enjoying the island, eventually stumbling upon some precious silver rupees, but he then hears a worrisome noise. What is it, a monster? Link decides to investigate. He runs to the edge of the island, whistles for his bird, and prepares to fly toward the source of the sound. Link is ready for rescue! See it for yourself:

WIP Critique- Character Animation

While considering both my perspective and the comments I received from other students, I think that my cycle animations and my choice of colors are the strongest aspects of my animation this far. To begin, the quality of my walk and jump cycles is strong. My animations are smooth and realistic, and they portray the confidence Link is supposed to portray at the beginning of the animation. In addition, my color choice was also a strong aspect which helped develop my setting and plot. Starting off with ink's bright, saturated yellows and greens, my scene emitted a lighthearted video game feel. Then, the change in lighting from bright to dark and somber evolved the meaning of the scene and created tension and a switch in mood. These elements play an essential role in making my animation pleasing and conveying the ideas and themes I intended to convey. On the other hand, I feel that both my perspective and the comments I received emphasize how I can make the plot and my intention clear...

Color Theory in my Animation

I want to portray my character, Link, as a lively, innocent boy who is roaming the playful setting of Skyloft. As he is roaming around, he is alerted by a sound , and this causes him to feel confused. Then, Link senses the possible urgency of the matter and calls his Loftwing - his majestic bird - and prepares to fly off the island. Through this story, I want the audience to feel what Link feels. At the beginning, the audience should feel at ease and even happy. Then, as Link becomes alert, the audience likewise feels confused. The audience should then feel suspense as they assume that something concerning might have occurred. Through this story, I want to first introduce Link's character. Link is to an extent innocent, yet I want to reinforce his strength and reliability. He is the one Skyloft is increasingly relying on for their safety, so I want to not only portray his immaturity but also his importance and his authority. As a result, I will implement bright colors into his a...

Robot Arm Critique Reflection

I feel that I incorporated lighting and advanced technical aspects well in my robot animation. I typically struggle with making my scenes too dark or allowing my lighting to remain stagnant, but with this animation I improved my lighting. I used a spotlight to emphasize my robot, and I transitioned from this emphasized lighting to darkness. In addition, I challenged myself well with technical aspects, in specific through using a liquid modifier and rigid bodies in an active animation. This process was difficult to apply, but in the end I successfully made the liquid in my animation move as the glass moved. I feel that I can improve on my creative elements and my camera movement. As pointed out by Mr. Bomboy, my camera actions were for the most part basic. Aside from one dynamic elevated long shot, my camera was set at an establishing shot. This stagnant perspective provided no mood development, and as a result I was not using camera movements to their full potential. Moreover, my sc...

Actions are specific movements of characters in an animation. These movements can be achieved through the manipulation of character rigs. With actions, animators can make their characters do things and move in a realistic manner.

Lina's Robot Arm Animation

Image
This animation was simple yet challenging at times: although the modeling was simple, animating the robot and coordinating fluid physics with the animation both presented some difficulties. My modeling was successful. The robot design was sleek and precise just as I intended for it to be. I chose nice textures for the table and the wall that I believe developed an environment as intended. Animating the robot presented specific challenges. To begin, the inorganic design of my robot made it difficult to control the bones. At some locations, the bones would bend and distort the mesh. I had to adjust my bones and mesh to solve this. Moreover, including the fluid animation was complicated at first. My initial plan was to have the glass fall on the table with rigid body physics then spill the liquid at specific frames. This was a daunting task for me to complete within the time I was given, so I compromised and decided to animate the glass falling by hand while still including fluid...

Critique Reflection (Pendulum)

My revised animation was a definite improvement from my initial pendulum animation. In terms of creativity, I have a strength in creating and portraying a specific story and environment. I can improve this strength by furthering the story and including more tropes and specific details. For instance, my scene, which was supposed to resemble a room with a ominous environment was a good start, but I could add a table with medical instruments or medicine on it. Moreover, one of my strengths was in the variety of textures I included. This strength can be developed even further by using UV mapping and through creating my own textures for specific objects. Some of my weaknesses, however, included the fluidity of camera movements and the establishment of context in the scene and its environment. I can improve my camera movements by understanding the emotion that I want to portray and by avoiding abrupt movements unless necessary. I can also establish more context by focusing on lighting and ...

Penduum Revised

Image
The use of design principles helped create a story and mood for my animation. Pocket watches can have many emotions and events associated with them, and my use of design principles helped convey a more hypnotic use and a more creepy mood. Moreover, the use of camera movements helped keep the scene more interesting, attracting attention and creating peace as needed. The use of these two strategies together aided in a more dynamic, meaningful animation.

This is my storyboard for my revised pendulum model.

Thumbnail Sketches: Pendulum

Image
I made 4 thumbnail sketches entalining possible settings for my pendulum pocketwatch animation. I will proceed with the bottom right setting because of the themes it conveys. It’s dark, morbid, and slightly medical in nature, and I feel this mood corelates with the Halloween season that just concluded. The dim green lighting and cracked wood will emphasize how run down the setting is, and it will define the pocketwatch as a hypnosis watch instead. This creates mystery in the context of the animation that I want to include. I will incorporate this setting through several means ranging through modeling, texturing, lighting, and camera and frame work. To begin, I will model the bed in the background as well as the appendage which carries the stopwatch. Next, I will use and bump map erie, realistic, and detailed  textures for the bed, wall, and floor. I will contrast this with the shiny, clean metal on the appendage and the stopwatch itself. Moreover, I will use a combination of dim...

Uses of Camera Movements

Camera angles and movements portray a variety of different emotions and ideas that can help in developing the significance and meaning of scenes in a movie. Here are some movements and their uses: Crane shot moving down- this moves viewers into the story or the scene, almost as if dropping the viewer into the scene Crane shot moving up- this shows how small the main object or character can be or how large an obstacle in the scene is Crane high to low- this creates a lot of fear in the viewer and shows authority in the main object of the scene Handheld camera movement- (often a ragged or shaky movement) it makes the viewer feel strange and sense danger Quick pan- this can change the emotional direction of a scene by perhaps revealing something dangerous that a character has to overcome Quick push in with the camera- this can create surprise or shock Slow dolly in- this can create tension and make the viewers grow more intimate with the character Slow dolly out- this can develo...

Lina A's Timing and Spacing Project

Image
Timing and spacing project including a penny movement test, a pendulum, and a bouncing "ball". Timing and spacing are both essential in making realistic animations. The penny model exemplifies the importance of these two aspects. The timing in the penny model ensures that the pennies hit the start, end, and middle of their paths at the same time. The spacing, on the other hand, differs with both pennies. The top penny has even spacing which makes it seem like a Roomba gliding on the floor. The bottom penny eases in and eases out, making it seem slower at the beginning and at the end of its journey. Instead of resembling a Roomba, this penny moves in a more realistic path that accelerates and decelerates as it would in the real world. In the example of the bouncing ball, the timing defines when the ball hits its maximum and minimum heights during each iteration. The spacing allows it to slow down as it reaches the top and accelerate as it falls down. Moreover, the example o...

J. Stuart Blackton: Innovation in Animation

Image
J. Stuart Blackton: Innovation in Animation  In his twenties, Blackton was a cartoonist. He created several illustrations for the Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper. Blackton's focus switched to creating animated art instead when he was sent to interview Thomas Edison. Edison was presenting his new creation, the vitascope, and Blackton was intrigued. During the interview, Blackton sketched Edison, and this caught Edison's interest. He began to think of ways to use sketches to create short silent films. This encounter began Blackton's revolutionary   work in animation. Blackton collaborated with Edison in 1900 on The Enchanted Drawing , a trick film including Blackton, the animated sketch of a man's face, and a wine glass and bottle. Edison filmed as Blackton sketched on a canvas, created changing expressions in his art, and incorporated real life objects into his 2 dimensional drawing. For instance, after drawing the wine glass and bottle, Blackton  "grabs...
